'BHIM for Women of Bharat’ Hackathon NPCI India & IIMA Ventures 

UPI clocked an impressive 14.436 Bn transaction in July 2024, an increase of 44.87% yoy. Since its launch, over 0.357 Tn transactions have been done over UPI by an estimated 322.58 mn unique users. The success of UPI is a testament to the contributions of various ecosystem members since its launch in 2016. Leading the charge was NPCI’s BHIM - India’s first UPI app that guided most of the early adoption of UPI.

Over 107.34 Mn Android downloads and 7.80 Mn IoS installs have taken place for BHIM app. It now offers a variety of payments and related services, including RuPay credit card payments via UPI. Continuing to transform, BHIM now aims at providing an enhanced interface, newer features and embedded services focused on underserved customers.

Trust and Comfort

How can BHIM’s interface be made more intuitive for neo-digital women customer personas?

Assisted / Onboarding Journeys

What elements, features etc. can be added to encourage more women to start using UPI?

Enhanced Utility

What products and features can be embedded in the app that can increase the engagement of women with the app? E.g. Assisted buying and selling - can we look at enabling women to sell their products also?

Grievance Redressal

How can BHIM build a fast and effective issue / grievance management mechanism, beyond a call center, for women? 

Solutions we seek

  • Ideas are great! However, we strongly prefer solutions that are ready to be integrated within the BHIM app. At least a prototype with the key feature(s) built needs to be presented to be eligible for participation. Up to three winners will be selected based on the viability of their idea and fitment to the problem statement(s).

For the winners

  • Cash prizes between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh are in store for the winners. But there is more! Promising solutions from the hackathon will get an opportunity to engage formally with NPCI and get their solutions integrated with the BHIM app. Eligible winners will be placed on a fast-tracked path for receiving financial and other support through the programs of IIMA Ventures, such as the Women’s Financial Inclusion Initiative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay any money to register for the Hackathon?

No. There are no charges for registration/application.

Do I need to have any specific qualifications to be a participant for the Hackathon?

Any individual/team can participate. A team must include at least one developer.

I have an idea not related to the problem statement but relates to the theme, can I still go ahead and register it?

Yes, you can go ahead and register your idea under a theme that has the maximum coherence to your idea.

Will I be getting a participation certificate?

No. only the winners will be awarded.

What resources will be provided to the participants for the virtual hackathon?

We will conduct a webinar on 9-14th August, 2024. Expert session on Gender focused solutions, Session NPCI/BHIM team on technical queries.

What programming language or technologies can I use for the hackathon?

Participants are free to use any programming languages, technologies, or frameworks suitable for their application. The goal is to create innovative solutions using the best tools available.

Who will own the IP (Intellectual Property) Rights of the product/code that I have built?

Developer/participant will own the IP (Intellectual Property) Rights of the product/code. To ensure security of your code, please avoid sharing any source code unless specifically asked by NPCI or IIMA Ventures.

Do we need to have the entire idea fully working?

The entire idea need not be fully implemented. However, the submission should be functional so that it can be reviewed by the judges. Wireframe, screenshots etc. can be used to present the entire flow wherever needed.

How do I submit what I have developed for the Hackathon?

Please use the ‘Submit your solution’ link in this document to apply. Details of your solution can be shared in any format - doc, docx, ppt, pdf, etc. Include demo video/live wireframe, and other required documentation if possible.

Will there be any cash prizes or rewards for the winning participants/ teams?

Yes, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, as determined by the jury. The prize structure is as follows:
First Place: ₹5,00,000
Second Place: ₹3,00,000
Third Place: ₹1,00,000

Will the winners automatically get to integrate with the BHIM app?

Winning solutions will be strongly considered for integration. However, any such engagement will be subject to NPCI’s procurement related policies.

What are the evaluation criteria?
